Windows XP Professional x64 Introduction:
Windows XP x64 Professional is the operating system edition that marked a new beginning for Microsoft, that plans to bring an all-new experience to computer users around the world. What was the development process behind the scenes for Windows XP and specifically x64 Windows XP? The development of Windows XP actually started way back in 1999 only a year after Windows 98 release. At that time Microsoft was working on two independent new versions of Windows codenamed Neptune and Odyssey. Odyssey was planned to be the next business version of Windows after Windows 2000, and Neptune was planned to be the next consumer version of Windows after Ammy. The difference this time around was that both versions of Windows would be based on the more reliable Windows NT kernel. It marked a new beginning for consumers as previous consumer versions of Windows had been based on the ever-aging Windows 9x kernel. This means the Neptune would finally kill off the Windows 9x and DOS era of home computing. By the turn of the century, however, Microsoft’s view of Neptune and Odyssey slightly changed. It was evident that having two separate development teams working on two independent projects was counterproductive. It was decided that the development team will be merged, killing off the Neptune and Odyssey codenamed in favor of a new approach codenamed Whistler. Whistler would operate as a single version of Windows but with the home and Professional edition, which was the first for the Windows operating system. Both editions of the Whistler will be developed by the same group of people allowing them to work more closely together during the development. Alternatively, Whistler became Windows XP and was released in 2001 as the OS.
Like 32-bit Windows XP x64 Professional also came bundled with Internet Explorer 6 and Outlook Express 6 as the default Internet Browser and Email clients but with more powerful architecture. Managing and customizing multiple user accounts was simplified in Windows XP, and the switch user functionality allowed people to Log into other accounts without affecting the programs and settings of another user. The font smoothing technology known as ClearType was introduced in Windows XP. That rendered fonts a lot more smoothly and fonts looked a lot better on newer screens like LCD’s. Windows XP still had the classic Windows style and some other colors like silver and olive green. In addition, Windows XP came pre-loaded with several desktop wallpapers including the ever so popular bliss. Several games were pre-installed with the system such as Hearts, Internet Backgammon, and the ever so nostalgic Pinball. Windows XP was also the first version of Windows to introduce the windows product activation. This was part of an effort to reduce piracy. The previous consumer friendly version of windows was windows millennium edition and that was not based off, of Windows NT technology, however, XP was with XP. Microsoft got the NT standard in the hands of many more users and that was imperative for the future success of future versions of windows. So, there you have it a quick tour of the long-lived Windows XP.
